Installation and Commissioning

Measuring Equipment, Smart Metering Systems, and Smart Meter Gateways

Installation that works right the first time

Replacing a meter takes twenty minutes. Replacing a meter where the meter location is unsuitable, the gateway cannot establish a connection, or the control box is missing requires three visits. The difference isn’t made on-site, but during preparation.

netzkontor nord installs modern metering equipment, smart metering systems, and smart meter gateways for metering point operators, municipal utilities, and grid operators. We don’t just mount the devices on the wall—we commission them and report back on what has actually been installed.

An Overview of Our Services

Removal of old meters, installation of mME and iMSys, meter replacement in single-family and multi-family homes, commercial properties, and other real estate. Activation, recommissioning, and sealing in accordance with your utility provider’s specifications.

Installation of the required components in the designated area of the meter cabinet. For smart metering systems, this also includes the installation and commissioning of the smart meter gateway, including connection to the power supply, establishing the communication link, and functional testing. This is followed by registration in the gateway administration system and confirmation of the installation status.

Testing and establishing the connection via cellular networks, LAN, or alternative transmission methods, including signal strength measurements and documentation of reception conditions. For critical locations, we document the situation rather than simply leaving the gateway connected and hoping for the best.

Installation and connection of control systems for heat pumps, wall boxes, and other controllable devices, tailored to your utility provider’s control concept.

Equipping PV and CHP systems with smart metering systems, bidirectional metering, and coordination with system documentation.

Determining whether the meter location is suitable for an iMSys, assessing the current condition, and providing structured feedback if an upgrade is necessary.

Meter numbers, meter readings, device data, and status messages are fed into your device management system and market communications in a structured manner.

  • Qualified Personnel: Work at the meter station should be performed by trained personnel, not by semi-skilled workers.
  • 100% First-Visit Resolution Rate: We resolve special cases in advance so the technician doesn’t have to make a second trip.
  • Smooth Handover: Any installations are entered into your system the same day.
  • Nationwide service: Based in Flensburg, we serve customers throughout Germany.

The Benefits of Working with Us

  • Less Follow-Up Work: Preliminary assessment significantly reduces the number of follow-up appointments.
  • Reliable throughput: Fixed weekly capacity instead of fluctuating outsourcing.
  • Reliable master data: Device data is returned in a structured format, not as a jumble of loose papers.
  • A single point of contact: Scheduling, installation, and documentation are all handled in one place.
  • Scalable capacity: We adapt when a deadline creates pressure.

The Process of an Assembly Run

  1. Preparation: Rollout list, equipment allocation, clarification of special cases
  2. Scheduling: Customer contact and route planning
  3. Installation: Replacement, commissioning, functional testing, sealing
  4. Documentation: On-site recording with photos and test steps
  5. Feedback: Data transfer to your systems; cases requiring clarification handled separately

Frequently Asked Questions About Smart Meter Installation

What is the difference between mME, iMSys, and SMGW?

A modern metering device is a digital meter without a communication connection. A smart metering system is created when this meter is connected to a smart meter gateway. The gateway is the secure communication unit that transmits meter readings in encrypted form and must be certified by the BSI.

What happens if the meter location isn't suitable?

In that case, the issue will be logged and reported back, rather than being handled on the fly. The metering point operator may require that the meter location be upgraded. We document the current condition so that you can discuss the retrofit with the account holder in a way that stands up to scrutiny.

Do you also install control systems in accordance with Section 14a of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG)?

Yes. In addition to the smart metering system, controllable consumption devices require a control device. We implement the control concept specified by your utility and document the assignment of the controlled devices.

Who is allowed to work at the meter station?

Work on the meter location may only be performed by qualified professionals who are listed in the network operator’s directory of installers or who are acting on behalf of the meter point operator. The service entrance box itself belongs to the network operator and may only be opened by the network operator or on its behalf.

Do you need installation capacity for your rollout?

Talk to us. We’ll review your volume structure and special cases and let you know what throughput we can realistically achieve.

Do you have any questions? We’d be happy to answer any questions you may have about meter installation, commissioning, and smart metering systems.
